TARENTUM. Nomos, about 270-250 BC. AR 6.55 g. The Dioscuri on horseback galloping l., the nearer one with cloak flying in the wind and holding club or spindle; between their heads, monogram ΦΥ, below, between the horses legs, ΣΩΔΑΜΟΣ. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin l. over waves, holding with his l. hand two spears and small round shield decorated with hippocamp, on his outstretched r. hand, Nike flying off to crown him; in field l., ΓΥ. SNG ANS 1126; Vlasto 777.
Nice old cabinet tone. Slightly ragged flan. Extremely fine

SYRACUSE. Tetradrachm, signed by the master engravers Euainetos and Eukleidas, about 425- 413 BC. AR 17.35 g. Fast quadriga r., the standing driver holds the kentron in his r. hand, three of the for reins with his l. hand, the fourth rein dragging between the forelegs of the horses; the driver is crowned by Nike flying l.; on the exergual line, signature ΕΥΑΙΝΕΤΟ in tiny letters; in exergue, broken wheel. Rev. ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΟΣ Head of Arethusa l., hair in ampyx and sphendone decorated with stars, wearing double-hooked earring and necklace; signature ΕΥΚΛΕΙ on the lower border of the sphendone; around, four dolphins. Rare. Masterpiece and highlight of the summit of classical Syracusan coinage.
