AUGUSTUS, 27 BC - 14 AD. Denarius, struck by the moneyer Mescinius Rufus, 16 BC. AR 3.82 g. S.C. S.C.OB.R.P.CVM. SALVT.IMP. CAESAR.AVGVS.CONS On a round shield, youthful, bare head of Augustus facing, slightly inclined to the r.; around, laurel wreath. Rev. L.MESCINIVS RVFVS III VIR Mars, nude, cloak over l. arm, standing facing, helmeted head turned l., on cippus, holding parazonium in his l. hand, lance in his r. hand; on the front of the cippus SPQR V P / S PR S ET / RED AVG BMC 17, 90; BN I, 93, 341; RIC² 68, 356.
Very rare. Excellent dark old tone. Extremely fine

The legend on the cippus reads: Vota publica suscepta pro salute et reditu Augusti. It refers to the the expedition of Augustus to Gaul in 16 BC.
